The organ is an instrument that is most commonly associated with churches, but can also be found in ballrooms, theatres and auditoriums.

All organs are played via a keyboard which resembles a piano keyboard. In organ terminology, the keyboard is called the manual which derives from the Latin word for “hand”. Many organs have multiple manuals stacked on top of each other. Additionally, some organs have notes that can be played with your feet via a pedalboard.

When the keys of an organ are pressed, air is blown under pressure through a series of pipes, which then vibrate to produce the characteristic organ sound.

One of the most famous pieces of organ music of all time is Toccata and Fugue in D minor by the legendary baroque composer Johann Sebastian Bach. You can watch a recording of this piece in the video below.

The organ featured very prominently in the musical The Phantom of the Opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber and also in Hans Zimmer’s orchestral score for the movie Interstellar.

In more recent years, the organ has been brought to a new generation of listeners by organist Anna Lapwood, who is the official resident organist of the Royal Albert Hall in London. Anna’s videos about the organ on social media have been watched millions of times.
